Amassing an organization wide dataset that is sanitized and accurately modeled provides an opportunity at the enterprise level for machine learning and discovery of insight. Once the organizational datastore is completed, and a system to discover relationships within that data that may not be obvious is implemented, the addition of more datapoints -- seemingly unnecessary could reveal latent value.

data is now a resource - but the application of that data is not clear yet. Organizations think they have more data than they know what to do with but are not amassing enough. The main roadblock is relating data across many sources. But as the industrial revolution harnessed material goods at scale, the same thing can be inferred - that the refining of this new resource (data) will lead to clearer applications of it and a digital revolution may be possible.

The most important cause of American industrialization was the abundance of raw materials, such as coal, iron, timber, copper, and petroleum. ... The US was successful at industrialization because they had many raw materials, motivated workers to push for industrialization, and businessmen to invest in companies.
